TAKUR DAHAN (Sooty Barbet)

The sooty barbet (Caloramphus hayii) is a species of bird in the family Megalaimidae. It is found in Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand, Sumatra and formerly Singapore where it is extirpated. Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

This species is split from the brown barbet (C. fuliginosus) which is an endemic species on Borneo.

Earth-toned bird with a large, powerful bill. Dark brown above and white below with a rusty-orange head and chest; the only predominantly brown barbet in its range. Inhabits both primary and secondary forests, occasionally venturing into edge habitats. Unlike other barbets, does not have a loud rollicking song; instead, listen for its high thin “tseep” notes, often given in series
